Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must be:

  • Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia.
  • Currently residing in the State of Western Australia.
  • Completing Year 6 at a Kent Street Senior High School Contributory Primary School, for Year 7 Aspire scholarships.
  • Completing Year 10, in the year of application, for Year 11 scholarships.
  • Completing Year 11, in the year of application, for Year 12 scholarships.
  • Enrolled or prepared to enrol and complete Years 7, 11 and/or 12 at Kent Street Senior High School, following the awarding of the scholarship.
  • Prepared to study the appropriate subjects and/or courses in Years 11 and/or 12. 

Scholarship Specific Criteria

Scholarships by Application

For the following:

  • Year 11 Kentian Academic Scholarship
  • Year 11 Suzy Urbaniak Earth and Environmental Science Scholarship
  • Year 11 Jean & Peter Stokes English and Humanities Scholarship
  • Year 11 Jean & Peter Stokes Creative Arts Scholarship
  • Year 12 Lance Maschmedt Physics Scholarship
  • Year 12 Kentian Vocational and Educational Training (VET) ATAR Scholarship
  • Year 12 Kentian Vocational and Educational Training (VET) General Scholarship

applicants must complete the Application Form and provide a copy of their Year 10 or Year 11 Semester 1 School report and a Response to the Selection Criteria form in which they explain:

  • why they should be awarded the scholarship.
  • how being awarded the scholarship would assist them.
  • their intended Senior School studies.
  • how they can make a positive contribution during their senior years at Kent Street Senior High School.
  • their ambitions for the future.

and submit the application online to kentianfoundation@gmail.com by the date shown on the information pamphlets handed out at school.

They must also:

  • Be aware of their responsibilities as an applicant.
  • Complete the application accurately and submit it on time.
  • Take responsibility for their Semester 1 Report and other documentation required for the application.
  • Check emails daily from the close of entry until notification of results.
  • Reply to emails relating to the scholarship process within 24 hours of receipt.
  • Be on time and prepared for the interview.
  • Direct questions relating to the scholarships, firstly, to the Year Coordinator, then to the Panel Coordinator, if further assistance is needed.

Note: Failure to observe the above instructions could result in the applicant’s disqualification. of their application.

Selection Criteria

When selecting the winners, the panel will consider the following:

  • The applicant’s ability to express him/herself clearly and concisely.
  • The applicant’s ability to demonstrate that he/she will provide a  positive contribution during their senior years at Kent Street High School.
  • Scholarship specific achievement and ambitions.
  •  The Year 11 Kentian Academic Scholarship will be awarded to the applicant the panel judges to best meet both the academic and selection criteria.
  • The Year 11 Suzy Urbaniak Earth and Environmental Science Scholarship will be awarded to an applicant enrolled or prepared to enrol in Year 11 Earth and Environmental Science (ATAR or General pathway)  or best meets the selection criteria and appears most likely to pursue a career in that field.
  • Year 11 Jean & Peter Stokes English and Humanities Scholarship will be awarded to an applicant enrolled or prepared to enrolled in ATAR English and at least one ATAR Humanities subject , best meets the selection criteria and appears most likely to use these subject in their  chosen career.
  • The Year 11 Jean & Peter Stokes Creative Arts Scholarship will be awarded to an applicant who studied at least one year 10 subject in a pre-requisite Pathway, is enrolled or prepared to enrol in a designated Year 11 designated subject or Certificate course, best meets the selection criteria and appears most likely to pursue a career in that field.

  • The Year 12 Lance Maschmedt Physics Scholarship will be awarded to an applicant enrolled in Year 11 Physics, intends studying Year 12 Physics at Kent Street SHS, appears most likely to enrol in Tertiary Physics, displays outstanding initiative and best meeting the selection criteria.
  • The Year 12 Kentian Vocational and Educational Training (VET) ATAR Scholarship will be awarded to an applicant enrolled in at least one Year 11 ATAR subject, studying at least one Certificate II Course  and best meets the selection criteria.
  • The Year 12 Kentian Vocational and Educational Training (VET) General Scholarship will be awarded to an applicant enrolled in at  no Year 11 ATAR subjects, studying at least one Certificate II Course  and best meets the selection criteria.

Interview Process

The panel will consist of three members, at least one Foundation Board member and Kent Street SHS staff members such as the relevant  Head of Learning Area and/or a Deputy Principal or specialist teacher.

The interview will take approximately ten minutes.  You are encouraged to think of a convincing statement which tells the panel WHY you should receive the scholarship. This could take two to three minutes.  The panel may then ask clarifying questions. The panel will have pre-read your application letter and school reports.

If you have applied for the Creative Arts Scholarship, we encourage you to bring any other supporting documentation as evidence of your experience and skill to share with the panel. This could take the form of photographs, work samples, performance programmes etc.

Scholarships by Selection

  • Year 7 Aspire Scholarships

Recipients will be selected in consultation between the Executive of Kent Street Senior High School and the Contributory Primary School.

  • The Year 11 Jean & Peter Stokes Financial Assistance Scholarship (2) will be selected by Student Services in consultation with the school executive and awarded to a student of sound character with a background of financial need.
  • The Year 11 Jock Bremner Scholarship for Excellence in Science will be selected by the Science Department and awarded to the Year 11 student who best demonstrates Excellence in Science.

Scholarship Recipient Responsibilities

Scholarships by Application

  • Check your emails daily from the day of notification until presentation.
  • Reply to emails relating to the scholarship presentation within 24 hours of receipt.
  • Attend the presentation and post-presentation function (if held).

All Scholarship Recipients

  • Demonstrate a positive attitude and commitment to your studies and in doing so your achievement should reflect positively on yourself, Kent Street High School and the Kentian Scholarship Foundation.

Notes:

  • Year 11 Scholarship recipients must enrol at Kent Street Senior High School in Year 12 to receive the second scholarship installment.
  • Apart from the Year 11 Jock Bremner Scholarship for Excellence in Science and the Year 12 Lance Maschmedt Physics Scholarship, it is unusual for students to be awarded more that one scholarship simultaneously.
